Seriously, Kerry, can you please update your blog? (This is what I tell myself weekly.) One may think that there is nothing going on in the workshop, but that couldn’t be further from the truth! SO MUCH IS HAPPENING! (it deserves all caps)

It is a whirlwind of excitement around here. The hum of the sewing machines… the click, click, click of the laptop’s keyboard… the chatter of new employees…

Okay, I’ll admit it. I haven’t posted recently because that picture from the Pumpkin Carve is seriously so beautiful. The sky here in Colorado is always surprising us.

But, it’s time to post again because we’re having an Open House and Sample Sale!  Yet another Comma Workshop party– you know how I love to throw a party.  Wine, holiday cheer… and quilts at holiday prices!

Saturday, December 8th from  5-8 pm____ At the Workshop!  349 Main Street in the back of Ferg’s Inn

Come out to Lyons for lots of events that evening– The Corner Studios’ “Shake Your Buddha” art opening, “Fire and Ice” Art Show at the Town Hall, music at Rogers Hall and more!

Last night we held our first annual Pumpkin Carve. Friends, pumpkins, s’mores, a late night scary movie… all combined to make a truly delightful evening.  Thanks to all who came out. The finished pumpkins look great!

We’re starting a new series on our blog called ‘Inside the Workshop’ where I’ll introduce you to the people that make Comma Workshop tick.  You’ll get to know our quilters (of course!), and the many others who help out, volunteer, trade work for quilts etc.  Without them, we wouldn’t be Comma Workshop.

As many of you know, over the last few years we’ve had several photographers help us out — from friends, to ex-boyfriends, to friends of friends. Most recently, a dear friend, Jess O’toole of La Domestique has seamlessly entered the circle. By day, Jess is a food writer and photographer with an insightful food website.  By night, (actually in the very early morning hours to capture the best light)  she’s styled and photographed many of our quilts.

Now, I’m the first to admit that I can be a bit particular about Comma Workshop (okay, controlling? maybe micromanage is a better word).  With Jess, it is a joy to just hand her the quilts and walk away!  Not only does she have the technical skills, but stylistically she understands the heart of Comma Workshop and it shows in the photos.

Now that we’re in Lyons, I’m declaring today National Tube-to-Work Day.

My Great Grandmother, my first quilt teacher.  We called her “Great” for short, and she was indeed, great.  Some of my earliest memories are of the quilting bees at Great’s house.  Their guest room housed a giant quilt frame where a quilt was always spread out, and Great and her sisters would sit and hand-quilt it. My sister and I would play under the quilt– an instant tent.  We poked our fingers and head up into the quilt, interrupting the rhythm above. Looking back, it probably really annoyed them.

Great passed away a couple years before Comma Workshop began, but I’m sure she’d be thrilled about all of our adventures.

We’ve moved!  12 miles northwest of Boulder to the small town of Lyons, Colorado (pop.2000).  Lyons, known as the Gateway to the Rockies because of its proximity to Rocky Mountain National Park,  is home to the award-winning Oscar Blues Brewery, Planet Bluegrass, and more importantly, some of our artisan quilters.

It’s quirky. It’s cute. It’s now our home.

Our new home (the yellow clapboard building in the photo) is located in Ferg’s Hotel, a small B&B that is owned by Planet Bluegrass, the organization the runs world famous bluegrass and folk festivals.   The hotel is used to host musicians passing through. How great is that?!  Our Workshop entrance is around back, and we have a light-filled studio space that connects to the hotel.  It’s perfect.

Last night we held our Local Launch Party and Pop-up Shop at FACTORYmade in downtown Boulder.  What a fabulous time!  Thanks to all who came out and helped make it a success.  Many friends took photos throughout the evening.  Here’s a little slideshow courtesy of my dear friend, Sarah Pittenger. @hheartsdesign
